Bir seramikçinin en keyifli anlarından biri çalışıp üretebileceği, tasarım yapabileceği kendi atölyesini kurmaktır. Ancak bu aynı zamanda, verilmesi gereken pek çok karar olduğundan, oldukça zor bir süreçtir. Her şeyden önce mekana karar vermek gerekir. Muhtemelen en zor kısmı da budur. HANGİ EKİPMANLARA İHTİYACINIZ VAR?
İlk olarak mekanı ve imkanlarınızı değerlendirmeniz gerekir. Ne çeşit ve hangi büyüklükte ekipmanlara ihtiyacınız var? Bütçeniz ne kadar? Tornayla mı çalışmak istiyorsunuz yoksa serbest şekillendirmeyi mi seviyorsunuz? Eğer serbest şekillendirme tercih ediyorsanız, çömlekçi tornası almayı erteleyebilirsiniz. Plaka ile çalışmak istiyorsunuz ama elde plaka açmak zor mu geliyor? Bu durumda plaka açma makinesi sizin için doğru bir yatırım olabilir. Kullandığınız çamuru hazır paketlenmiş mi alıyorsunuz, kendi çamurunuzu yapmayı mı tercih ediyorsunuz? Eğer kendi çamurunuzu yapacaksanız, çamur hazırlama ekipmanlarına ihtiyacınız olacaktır. One of the most enjoyable moments of a ceramist is to establish his own workshop where he can work, produce and design. But this is also a very difficult process, as there are many decisions to be made.
First of all, you need to decide on the venue. This is probably the hardest part. How close is the proposed venue to your home? Does it have good ventilation? Dust, gases that may come out during cooking and heat can be harmful to your health. Therefore, it is very important that your workshop is well ventilated. Is it easy to move around in the space? It is preferred that there are no steps or obstacles in the workshop.
The first two issues you need to look at in the venue are the electricity and water infrastructure. Your workshop must have a water connection and sufficient electrical infrastructure for your furnace, other equipment and lighting. Before you decide on your workshop or buy your oven, you should definitely check the electrical infrastructure.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED?
First of all, you need to evaluate the place and your possibilities. What type and size of equipment do you need? What is your budget? Do you want to work with a lathe or do you like freeforming? If you prefer freeforming, you can put off buying a potter's lathe. Do you want to work with a plate, but it is difficult to open a plate by hand? In this case, a plate opener may be the right investment for you. Do you buy the mud you use ready-packaged or do you prefer to make your own mud? If you are going to make your own mud, you will need mud preparation equipment. Even when using packed sludge, if you need to recycle a large amount of sludge, a vacuum press can reduce your load and speed up your production process a lot.
In addition to these, hand tools will be required. Basically, the hand tools you need are: modeling tools, sponges, wood and plastic scraper, mud cutting wire, knife, ruler, caliper, turret, brushes for glazing or - if you are going to glaze by dipping - glazing tongs. Apart from these, various sizes of towels, aprons and scales should not be forgotten. These tools will be enough to get started, over time you can get different tools depending on your working style and products.
